Cubic Feet to Cubic Yards
Divide cubic feet by 27 to get cubic yards. Multiply cubic yards by 27 to get cubic feet. The relationship is exact: 1 yd³ = 27 ft³.
The cubic foot conversion
A yard is 3 feet long. A cube with an edge of one yard therefore measures 3 × 3 × 3 feet and holds 27 cubic feet. The factor is 27 for volume, rather than 3 for length or 9 for area.
CF and ft³ commonly refer to cubic feet. CY, cu yd, and yd³ refer to cubic yards. When a supplier calls bulk material a yard, confirm that they mean a cubic yard.
Cubic feet to cubic yards chart
| Cubic feet | Cubic yards |
|---|---|
| 1 ft³ | 0.037 yd³ |
| 2 ft³ | 0.074 yd³ |
| 3 ft³ | 0.111 yd³ |
| 5 ft³ | 0.185 yd³ |
| 10 ft³ | 0.37 yd³ |
| 20 ft³ | 0.741 yd³ |
| 27 ft³ | 1.00 yd³ |
| 40 ft³ | 1.481 yd³ |
| 54 ft³ | 2.00 yd³ |
| 60 ft³ | 2.222 yd³ |
| 75 ft³ | 2.778 yd³ |
| 81 ft³ | 3.00 yd³ |
| 100 ft³ | 3.704 yd³ |
| 180 ft³ | 6.667 yd³ |
| 186.3 ft³ | 6.90 yd³ |
| 500 ft³ | 18.519 yd³ |
| 1,000 ft³ | 37.037 yd³ |
For example, 75 cubic feet is about 2.778 cubic yards, and 186.3 cubic feet is exactly 6.9 cubic yards. Enter a supported decimal or fraction to convert another volume.
Cubic yards to cubic feet
| Cubic yards | Cubic feet |
|---|---|
| 0.25 yd³ | 6.75 ft³ |
| 0.5 yd³ | 13.5 ft³ |
| 1 yd³ | 27 ft³ |
| 2 yd³ | 54 ft³ |
| 3 yd³ | 81 ft³ |
| 5 yd³ | 135 ft³ |
| 10 yd³ | 270 ft³ |
| 20 yd³ | 540 ft³ |
A fractional yard is a fractional volume. Half a cubic yard is 13.5 cubic feet, and a quarter yard is 6.75 cubic feet. Spreading either volume into a layer still requires a depth to determine coverage.
Bag volumes and whole bag purchases
Divide the required cubic feet by the yield of one bag. One cubic yard contains 54 portions of 0.5 ft³, 18 portions of 1.5 ft³, or 13.5 portions of 2 ft³. If you must buy whole 2 ft³ bags, round the purchase up to 14 bags.
Soil, mulch, gravel, and concrete share the same volume unit relationship. Their densities and bag specifications can differ. Concrete bags need their finished mixed yield; a bag’s weight alone is not a volume. For soil bags labeled in quarts, check the dry quart conversion before counting bags.
Feet, square feet, and cubic feet
A linear foot is length. A square foot is area. A cubic foot is volume. A length or area cannot be converted to cubic yards until the missing dimensions are supplied.
Use the main calculator for length, width, and depth. Use square feet to cubic yards for an area and depth, or square yards to cubic yards when the known area is in square yards.
Cubic Feet to Cubic Yards questions, answered.
How many cubic feet are in one cubic yard?
Exactly 27. Multiply a cubic yard quantity by 27 for cubic feet, or divide cubic feet by 27 for cubic yards.
How do I convert 60, 100, or 180 cubic feet?
Divide by 27. The results are about 2.222, 3.704, and 6.667 cubic yards respectively. The live converter handles other quantities and the reverse direction.
Can I convert square yards to cubic feet here?
Area needs a depth before it becomes a volume. Use the square yards to cubic yards calculator, which also gives cubic feet as an additional result.
Does one cubic yard of dirt have a different number of cubic feet?
No. Every cubic yard contains 27 cubic feet. Dirt, gravel, and other materials can have different weights in the same volume.
How do I write cubic feet or cubic yards without a superscript?
Common forms include cu ft and ft^3 for cubic feet, and cu yd and yd^3 for cubic yards. The cubic part is essential because feet and yards alone normally describe length.
