Cubic Yards to Gallons
One cubic yard equals about 201.974 US liquid gallons or 168.179 imperial gallons. The gallon system must be specified. This is volume equivalence, not a material’s water content.
US liquid gallons and imperial gallons
A US liquid gallon is exactly 231 cubic inches. An imperial gallon is exactly 4.54609 liters. They are different units, so a bare gallon label can give the wrong answer if the intended system is unclear.
| One cubic yard in | Equivalent quantity, rounded |
|---|---|
| US liquid gallons | 201.974026 |
| Imperial gallons | 168.178557 |
| US liquid quarts | 807.896104 |
| Imperial quarts | 672.71423 |
| US dry quarts | 694.279257 |
Liquid quarts and dry quarts
A US liquid quart is one quarter of a US liquid gallon. A US dry quart has a different volume and is often relevant when interpreting dry measure labels. The converter lists these units separately, rather than silently treating every quart as liquid.
For a bag labeled in US dry quarts, choose that input unit and convert to cubic feet for a volume based bag count. Check that the bag label actually uses that system. For example, 40 US dry quarts is about 1.556 ft³.
Gallons of soil or concrete
A cubic yard of dirt occupies the same bulk volume as about 201.974 US liquid gallons, but it does not contain that many gallons of water. Likewise, converting a finished concrete volume to gallons does not determine mixing water or mix ingredients.
The conversion says nothing about weight, porosity, moisture, or how well material packs into a particular container. Use material specifications and bulk density for those questions.
Gallons back to cubic yards
Select the gallon or quart system as From and cubic yards as To. Fractional quantities work in either direction. If the amount is already in cubic feet, cubic inches, or cubic meters, choose that volume unit directly.
Cubic Yards to Gallons questions, answered.
How many gallons are in one cubic yard?
About 201.974 US liquid gallons. If you mean imperial gallons, the answer is about 168.179. Specify the system to avoid mixing units.
How many quarts are in a cubic yard?
About 807.896 US liquid quarts or 694.279 US dry quarts. Imperial quarts are another unit. The output selector names each system explicitly.
Can this calculate concrete mixing water?
No. It converts the finished bulk volume between units. Mixing water depends on the actual concrete product or mix design and cannot be obtained from this volume conversion.
How many gallons are in a yard of dirt?
If yard means one cubic yard, the bulk volume is equivalent to about 201.974 US liquid gallons. This is not the amount of moisture in the soil.
