Cubic Yards to Square Feet

Square feet covered = cubic yards × 324 ÷ depth in inches. One cubic yard covers 81 square feet at 4 inches deep or 108 square feet at 3 inches deep.

Area and depth

Why coverage changes with depth

A cubic yard measures volume. Spreading it more thinly covers a larger area. Without a depth, there is no single square footage, square yardage, or square inch result.

Area (ft²) = volume (yd³) × 324 ÷ depth (in)
Uniform depth1 yd³5 yd³8 yd³
1 in324 ft²1,620 ft²2,592 ft²
2 in162 ft²810 ft²1,296 ft²
3 in108 ft²540 ft²864 ft²
4 in81 ft²405 ft²648 ft²
6 in54 ft²270 ft²432 ft²
12 in27 ft²135 ft²216 ft²

For example, 8 cubic yards at 4 inches covers 648 square feet. These are geometric coverage values before a material specific volume state conversion or ordering allowance.

Area and depth

Square yards, square inches, and alternate volume units

The output selector can display square feet, square yards, square meters, square inches, or acres. They all describe the same surface at the depth entered. Divide square feet by 9 for square yards, or multiply by 144 for square inches.

You can start with cubic feet or cubic meters by changing the input volume unit. A bare number of feet or inches is a length; it is not a volume until the other dimensions are supplied.

Area and depth

Find depth or the length of a path

Depth (in) = volume (yd³) × 324 ÷ area (ft²)
Path length (ft) = volume (yd³) × 324 ÷ width (ft) ÷ depth (in)

Choose Required depth when you know the volume and the area. For example, 1.5 yd³ spread over 162 ft² gives 1.5 × 324 ÷ 162 = 3 inches of depth. Choose Path length for a uniform strip with a known width and depth. Two cubic yards along a 3 ft wide path at 4 inches deep gives 2 × 324 ÷ 3 ÷ 4 = 54 linear feet. A varying depth or width needs separate sections or a more detailed model.

For a new project where area and depth are already known, the square feet to cubic yards calculator runs the calculation in the other direction.

Common questions

Cubic Yards to Square Feet questions, answered.

How many square feet are in one cubic yard?

A depth is required. At 1 inch, one cubic yard covers 324 square feet. At 12 inches, it covers 27 square feet. Neither figure is correct for every layer depth.

Can I convert cubic yards to square yards?

Yes, after specifying depth. At 4 inches, one cubic yard covers 81 square feet, which is 9 square yards. Change the output unit to square yards.

How many square inches are in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard contains 46,656 cubic inches, which is volume. To find an area in square inches, specify a depth. At 1 inch deep, the coverage is 46,656 square inches.

Does this predict compacted gravel coverage?

It predicts the geometric coverage of the entered volume at a uniform depth. If your delivery is loose and your target is compacted, first use a project specific volume relationship for those states.
